Can Technology Fix World Problems?
Summary
While there are obviously many world problems, here are some major ones technology is trying to fix:

War is another problem and although the focus now is on the Ukraine war, major continental wars have not occurred in the last 70 years.

Technology to fix the above:
- Health: Pandemics stress health systems. Technology helps early detection of disease outbreaks. Telemedicine, remote monitors, wearables and telehealth are used in remote areas.

Vaccines can now be developed quickly, such as Covid’s Pfizer and Moderna’s mRNA types using genomics. The latest now covers future variants. Development of vaccines used to take decades – see previous blog.
. - Food Security: Numbers are decreasing but millions of people still suffer from hunger and malnutrition. Precision farming, crop monitoring and genetic engineering help. Automated farming and smart irrigation systems increase crop yields. Better food processing and preservation reduce food waste and improve distribution systems.

Vertical farming speeds growth, uses a fraction of the water and is close to markets. While pricey, new systems are reducing costs. It is booming – see previous blog
. - Poverty: Free online education is key – see previous blog. Mobile payments, blockchain and digital payments replace accounts for people with no access to banks. Starlink’s remote area satellite internet creates easy access anywhere. Social media, online platforms and chatbots create more awareness of fixes and methods.
. - Climate Change: A global issue that needs urgent attention and there are huge monetary incentives for entrepreneurs. The tipping points are a major concern, with probable rising sea level costs far outweighing prevention. Low cost carbon capture is needed to reduce the excess already in the atmosphere. . - Environmental Degradation: Remote sensing, drones, and data analytics are used. Satellites track deforestation and illegal logging, while smart sensors and IoT (Internet of Things) monitor pollution to enable waste management. Removing plastics from oceans is ongoing and building fast.
. - Human Rights: Discrimination, oppression and censorship occur in many parts of the world. Technology empowers marginalized communities, providing platforms for free speech, privacy protection and information.

Social media and online activism raise awareness, mobilising support for human rights. Blockchain technology provides transparent secure documentation and verifies human rights violations.
. - Water Availability: Water scarcity is getting worse because of climate change and extended droughts. New lower cost methods extract moisture from the air. Prices start at $10 depending on capacity. IoT senses water quality and can help with rainwater collection and water recycling.

Scams have increased dramatically, but the use of 2FA, authenticators, rolling codes, etc. goes a long way in preventing money loss. Spam education, sceptical wariness and vigilance are very important. It will be interesting if quantum computers markedly help in crime exposure and source identity.

Detect scams early by checking your bank accounts every day via your mobile phone. There are apps for ‘find my phone’. Put this on your and your partner’s or trusted friend’s phone in case you lose yours or they lose theirs.

In summary, technology has the potential to help fix global problems but is not a panacea. Collaboration between governments and communities is needed.

Thanks for putting this up, cammies, clearly there is lots of research here. I would argue that technology is a tool that can be used in different ways. Sometimes it is employed positively or negatively for certain individuals. For example, regarding human rights, social media allowed the Arab Spring, but repressive governments have caught up, and technology is now used more effectively to control populations. Ai face scanning technology is used to track Uighurs in xinjiang, which communist party officials there may consider very positive. Weapons technology deployed on both sides of the ukraine- Russia conflict seem positive or negative depending on your point of view. Technology helps with world problems you mentioned, but also creates them, e.g. fossil fuels technologies have been used to cause global warming. What do you think?
Thanks for taking time out to read and comment. Always appreciated. I guess there will always be bad actors and crime but hopefully decreasing or effectively repressed sometime in the future. Face scanning helps good governments do their job, but as you say can be repressive with bad ones.
Fossil fuels? A godsend initially but the effect of emissions was not thought of and fossil fuels have done a great job advancing society. Hopefully, it will be fixed in time, As I say a one minute to midnight problem!

Another interesting Blog and technology has in some way been with us and hopefully improving our lives since man invented the wheel. Necessity is the mother of invention and that’s the way the world and humans have evolved.
The modern computer era has been a big jump and some of us of an early generation find it hard to adapt. It will probably be no different going forward with the current generation being confused by development created by future generations. Quantum computing will possibly provide the platform for future technological development. If we don’t have technology advancement the growth of human race is limited. As it leaves an ever increasing footprint humans will struggle with food, housing, law & Order, and many other day to day activities we take for granted.

Yes, as I replied to Don, humans are curious and always trying to improve our lot to make life safer and easier. Of course, there are problems but with education, there are now millions of bright knowledgeable young minds seeking solutions. Like you, I didn’t grow up with computers or the Internet and when I see how fast the young are using it, I envy them. Such is life.

Great to hear from you again. I couldn’t agree more. Change is ongoing and inevitable. Technology does cause problems, but more research is also ongoing to fix them. Humans are curious.
