What are ChatBots?

Explosive Growth Simply Explained : Joinfree and Talk to the Young Confidently

What are ChatBots?

Summary

ChatBots are programs that use AI (Artificial Intelligence) to provide detailed information in readable format about any subject you ask. Much publicity has arisen about ChatGPT which is a free version. While it is in the Beta phase. It attracted 1M users in 5 days since its launch in November 22. In all, there are 20 to 30 other ChatBots. Some say ChatBots will be the end of Google searches.

Similarly, AI can produce images that look professionally produced by humans, see  Dall-E

ChatGPT

One deficit of ChatGPT is it has knowledge only up to the end of 2021 at present, so it won’t provide new information after that. But to try it, go to  ChatGPT.

Other ChatBots

I asked Perplexity AI, also free, a chatbot recommended by a friend, the following:

“What are the best chatbots for personal use in 2023?” Strangely, it didn’t include itself. Here are the results:

“This guide reviews the best available AI chatbots one by one. The reviews are thorough, so you might want to skip to one in particular, such as #1. You can use the links below to jump into different sections of this review:

  1. Aivo
  2. Infeedo
  3. Paradox AI Olivia
  4. Tidio
  5. Laiye
  6. Pandorabots
  7. Ada
  8. Botsify
  9. Meya
  10. Replica”

Example of a Chatbot Answer

This is Perplexity.Ai’s answer to “Provide a brief history of New Zealand”

“The first people to arrive in New Zealand were ancestors of the Māori, who likely arrived from Polynesia between 1200 and 1300 AD[1]. The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to arrive in 1642[5], followed by Captain James Cook in 1769[2].

In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and Maori[2], which granted self-governance to New Zealand. This led to increased petitioning for self-governance from the growing number of British settlers, resulting in the passing of the New Zealand Constitution Act 1852[2].

In the 1880s, New Zealand’s economy grew from one based on wool and local trade to the export of wool, cheese, butter and frozen beef and mutton to Britain[2]. In 1882, the first shipment of frozen meat made it successfully to England[5], enabling New Zealand to become a key supplier for Britain.

Thousands of New Zealanders served and died, overseas in the First World War[5], establishing a tradition of military service. With American protection during World War II, New Zealand fought both in Korea in the 1950s and Vietnam in the 1960s[5].

Today, New Zealand is home to more than 5 million people with a rich mix of Māori and European cultures [3].”

Pros and Cons of Chatbots

No doubt, there will be concerns about Chatbots, such as the policing of students writing essays or reports, etc. Reporters and journalists will probably use them as aids.  Maybe I will use them to provide data for blogs!

Anything that saves time is usually a plus. It is quicker and increases output. Obviously, it should be edited to suit your style.

ChatGPT4, being released in 2023, will consult over 1 Trn parameters. Google is on ‘Red Alert’ as its PaLM uses only 750 Bn!

  1. Hi Cambell and Happy New Year!

Again another interesting read. My only concerns are :
    1. Who is the moderator?
    2. Do they allow the use of “Commons”?
3.Is the reader able to edit other than just give a thumbs-up or thumbs down? I have made several edits over the years to incorrect article points on Wikipedia for example.

I agree that it will be interesting to see how they evolve in a world where from a research point of view there is a lot of ill-informed and at times blatantly false information out there.

Hopefully we’ll catch up soon. Best regards to Bala and Murray also,

    Peter

Thanks, Peter and good to hear from you.

      1. I don’t think there is a moderator, except AI. That’s the point.
      2. Wikipedia defines Digital Commons as “information and knowledge resources that are collectively created and owned or shared between or among a community and that tend to be non-exclusive, that is, be (generally freely) available to third parties”, so I guess AI has access to it and it is commonly used.
      3. I edit the results for my personal use, mainly the wording or in rare cases the content accuracy if I can see it is incorrect. However, I can’t answer ‘editing it for general use’. I suspect you would need to contact Open AI or the website concerned. Over time the content should become more accurate. But the parameters will always include some opinions. Eventually, I think the total opinion analysis will be sensible and generally accepted.
for instance, ChatGPT4, being released in 2023 will consult over 1 Trn parameters. Google is on ‘Red Alert’ as its PaLM uses only 750 Bn.

Are you playing any golf or will you be?

Any History of NZ that doesn’t mention Campbell Keenan has to be severely questioned!! Look forward to another year of Keenan’s Knowledge Enhancement. Happy New Year to you.
